CONSUMER CONFIDENCE: With the U.S. unemployment rate holding steady at 5%, consumers display mixed emotions about the employment outlook … those who expect “more” layoffs over the next six months lowers to 30.6% (v. 31.7% in July), “fewer” rises to 13.4% (v. 12.6%), while “same” stable at 56.0% (v. 55.7%).  However, personal fears about becoming laid off up slightly in August to 4.4% (from 4.0% last month), but down almost 2 points from last year (6.3%).

GAS PRICES ARE UP AND SAVINGS ARE DOWN. Prices at the pump have consumers feeling the drain in their wallets… those focusing on needs (i.e. gas) over wants (apparel, vacations, electronics – the “good” stuff) is up two points this month to 46.5%, still down from '04 (50.5%).
